Lee Gillis
H.L. “Lee” Gillis, Ph.D. is chair of the Department of Psychological Science and a tenured professor of psychology at Georgia College & State University, Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university. He has been at GCSU since 1986 teaching undergraduate and graduate students in applied courses that include most recently group dynamics, interpersonal behavior, personality theory, and the therapeutic use of adventure. He was graduate coordinator of the masters in psychology program and served as coordinator of a specialty in adventure therapy from 1995 -1998, the first of its kind in the US; the specialty ended when the masters program was deactivated.
He is also a licensed psychologist (#1335 GA) and has practiced adventure therapy in private practice and, since 1991 in the residential treatment settings of Project Adventure, Inc in Covington, GA where he has served as a trainer of adventure based counseling, therapeutic coordinator, and consulting psychologist until the facility closed in May 2010. Dr. Gillis’ primary clinical work at Project Adventure has been psychological assessment, individual and group psychotherapy with adjudicated and social service youth in substance abuse, sex offender, and independent living programs. He also provided individual and group supervision and continuing education training for the clinical staff.
He is currently a member at large on the board of the Society for Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy of the American Psychological Association. He has previously served as a member of the board of directors of AEE. He was awarded the Michael Stratton Practitioner Award from AEE (2000) and the Distinguished Professor Award from GCSU (1993).
